Cytokeratins are proteins that are involved in the cytoskeleton. Cytokeratin 7 (CK7) is a 54 kDa type II (or basic) keratin containing three coiled-coil domains. Cytokeratin 7 is found in both columnar and glandular epithelium of the lung, cervix, breast, and bile ducts and in the collecting ducts in the kidney as well as mesothelium. Cytokeratin 7 has been shown to interact with the EGF receptor and heat shock protein 70 kD1A. The coordinated expression of this keratin with cytokeratin 20 is commonly used as a diagnostic marker for a variety of carcinomas.
