DNMT3B, also known as DNA methyltransferase 3B or DNA MTase HsaIIIB, is a 95–110 kDa member of the C5 methyltransferase family of enzymes. It functions as de novo methyltransferases and is essential for the establishment of DNA methylation patterns during development. DNMT3B is ubiquitously expressed in the embryo and has been found to be associated with nuclear pericentric heterochromatin. It is expressed at very low level in most tissues except the testis, thyroid, and bone marrow. DNMT3B level is profoundly increased in various cancers, including acute and chronic myelogenous leukemias and colon, breast, and stomach carcinomas.
