Galectin-9, also known as ecalectin, is a 40 kDa galactoside-binding protein with 2 conserved carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs). Galectin-9 is expressed in a variety of tissues and cells, including lymphocytes, dendritic cells, granulocytes, eosinophils, astrocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and thymus epithelial cells. Galectin-9 is involved in events such as cell aggregation, cell adhesion, chemotaxis, and apoptosis. Galectin-9 induces regulatory T cells and suppresses Th1 and Th17 responses.
