Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a cytokine that plays a role in allergy and immunity. It is primarily produced by activated CD4+ T cells, mast cells, and eosinophils. IL-4 stimulates Th2 cell development by activating the transcription factor STAT6, which ultimately results in enhancing expression of the cytokines IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-13. IL-4 can also regulate the production of IgE and IgG1 by B cells.
