Bullous Pemphigoid, Neurodegenerative Disease, and Hippocampal BP180 Expression: A Retrospective Postmortem Neuropathologic Study

Barrick. B.J., Ida, C.M., Laniosz, V. et al.

An epidemiologic association between neurodegenerative disease (ND) and bullous pemphigoid (BP) has been established (Bastuji-Garin et al., 2011; Brick et al., 2014). Moreover, Seppänen et al. (2006, 2007) reported expression of BP180 (BP antigen 2; collagen XVII), the primary antigen for pathogenic autoantibodies in BP, in specific areas of the central nervous system, including the hippocampus. The hippocampus frequently is affected in the NDs linked to BP. One hypothesis to explain the association between ND and BP is that neuronal damage may expose central nervous system BP180 to the immune system.
